The virtues of a Paladin tank

First, as a Palla tank, you pick a group of mobs, pretty easy, then you shoot your Avenger's Shield at them and take a short break as they dazed mobs walk towards you. Next, you'll hit Consecration and Holy Shield. I know, it's a lot of buttons to hit but you can arrange them in sequence on your keyboard so you always know what order to hit them in. Finally, Retribution Aura activated, you will be generating enough passive aggro to keep the mobs attacking you. Even with your sword skill at level 1, you should do just fine. Beyond that you can pick from several seals based on your party's makeup and the specific situation.

Humor aside, there are a lot of situations where an ungeared Paladin tank is extremely beneficial, especially in comparison to a Warrior tank. I've talked about this before but as I progress my new Paladin, it becomes more apparent. Consider Auchenai Crypts, where the mobs will spawn a non-elite ghosts when aggroed. As long as you have an awake healer to keep you alive, and know the location of your consecration button, it's unlikely that anyone will beat you in threat. This makes things trivial to a Paladin tank, where a Warrior would likely choose to ignore the adds and have dps focus on them to kill them as soon as possible. This isn't the best solution for a warrior when it comes to the two 5 sets of elite skeletons, where most groups would need to stop, assign CC and move forward with caution, a Paladin can follow the above instructions to success. Consider how much easier Durnholde keep is with a Paladin tank.

When advise says things like 'Crowd Control is essential for this instance. Two classes with CC is a necessity for any smooth run and three CC classes is recommended.' (wowwiki's Sethekk Halls page) You can negate this advise when palla tanking, at least for non-heroics at the appropriate levels (67-69). I believe they assume you've got a warrior or druid tank that can't just use massive passive threat generation via the 3 button method described above to control the adds, or wowwiki considers Paladins as 3 classes of crowd control.

There are other benefits to Paladins that will go noticed if you were to immediately switch to your warrior counterpart. Consider the collection of available Auras, Blessings, Seals and Judgments. A combination of Blessing of Wisdom, Seal of Wisdom and Judgement of Wisdom are the ingredients to 'infinite mana mode.' Your aura and seal usage can be combined in several very effective ways customized towards certain situations. Open up with judge Crusader and enable Seal of Righteousness for more holy threat. A warrior also misses the benefit of being able to use some wipe savers like Divine Intervention, Resurection, any of the various bubbles that can be used to save your party when you or your healer goes afk (I know, your not supposed to go afk).

I could talk almost all day about the benefits of a Paladin tank and almost forget to mention their incredible 40 yard multi-target taunt but they still may never outweigh my prefence in warrior play style. And we'll see in the coming days how they match up against Warriors in level 70 instances and Karazhan.
